NOVEL:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The novel moves from the beginning to the end with flashbacks to give clarity to each character&#8217;s history.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>1. Plot:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Tsotsi <\/em><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">tells the story of a young gang leader&#8217;s journey from a life of crime and senseless killings, to a period of compassion, care and sacrifice, and to discovering those aspects that define him as a human.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>2. Setting:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">i) The novel is set in the 1950s, in a township near Johannesburg.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">ii) People in the township are marginalised by apartheid.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">iii) People struggle to make a living and their shack homes are constantly threatened by demolition teams.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">iv) Many resort to crime to survive.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">v) People live without a sense of hope, decency or love.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>3. Narrator:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">i) The reader is witness to the story through the eyes of an omniscient third person narrator.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">ii) The reader gets to know the characters, their biographies and their thoughts, without them being present.\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">iii) The reader accompanies Tsotsi on his journey to redemption, by getting insight into his thoughts, dilemmas, conflicts and personal traumas.\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><a style=\"color: #33cccc;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aflitrica.co.za\/index.php\/tsotsi-aids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NARRATIVE PERSPECTIVE<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>4. Conflict:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">i) For Tsotsi to achieve redemption he has to resolve his conflict.\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">ii) He carries the trauma\u2019s associated with his childhood.\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">iii) He has to revisit his memories to redefine himself as David.\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">iv) He can only fulfil his spiritual journey when he embraces love and compassion, and when he amends his acts of violence.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>5.
